Timothy Johanson, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona where he teaches the next generation of baby doctors. His research involves the impact of adverse childhood experiences on parenting effectiveness and is currently studying how parenting interventions with high risk families in inner-city Tucson can impact the academic, behavioral, and social outcomes of the children.

In this 4-part video series, Dr. Johanson asks “Why do some kids develop resilience and others do not?” Is there a way to teach resilience to kids who have experienced difficulties growing up? Current research suggests some new answers to these important questions for mental health providers, teachers, and youth workers.

The learning objectives for this 4-part video include:

  • Review current research on developing resilience, especially in the presence of childhood adversity.
  • Underscore the importance of resilience training for parents, teachers, mental health providers and youth workers.
  • Understand five key messages that promote resilience.
