Program - Clarity Child Guidance Center

program

Our internship’s training model most closely fits the Practitioner-Scholar Model, emphasizing practical application of knowledge. However, traditional and contemporary psychodynamic and family systems clinical training also influences our program by making the clinician’s personal development into a core focus.

training philosophy

Clarity concentrates on clinical practice through service delivery, as well as learning by doing while receiving intensive, process-oriented supervision. Supervisors use a developmental model of clinical supervision used tailored to individual training needs. Case conferences and training seminars on psychodynamic case formation also support interns’ professional development.

Our training approach values working collaboratively and observing supervisors providing direct services. Interns benefit from real-time feedback, modeling, and live demonstration of techniques.

program aims

Our goal is to train competent child and adolescent psychologists who can provide psychological assessments and psychotherapy from a psychodynamic and family systems approach through an integrated developmental framework.

Graduate training programs often do not adequately prepare students in psychological assessment, let alone personality assessment. Clarity is excited to offer training in comprehensive psychological assessments, including the use of performance-based personality measures (e.g., Rorschach).

Clarity prepares our interns to navigate cultural and individual differences in research and practice, including conflicts or tension caused by the intersection of different areas of diversity. We discuss issues as they arise for both patients and interns.

  • Patients’ ages range from 3 to 17, with an average age of 14 years old. 66 percent of patients fall between 13 and 17.
  • Gender is evenly split for our patients, with 50.3 percent female and 49.7 percent male. Data is not available for gender nonconforming patients.
  • 59 percent of our patients identify as Hispanic or Latinx.
  • 67 percent of children receiving services are considered low income.

Clarity seeks interns and faculty from diverse backgrounds to ensure a supportive, encouraging learning environment. The program avoids any actions that would impose a significant, disproportionate burden based on personal and demographic characteristics.
