Advocacy

1 out of every 5 children suffers from mental illness. That’s 80,000 children in Bexar County alone! And only 1 in 5 of those children who suffer from mental, emotional, or behavioral problems actually receive treatment. Half of the children who don’t receive treatment will drop out of high school, and are twice as likely to start using illicit drugs and alcohol. Some will end up in the juvenile system and many attempt suicide.

The One in Five Minds campaign, sponsored by Clarity Child Guidance Center, was created not only to raise awareness about mental illness, but also to break down stigma. Many times parents and community members hesitate to speak up or ask important questions about mental illness because of the stigma attached to it. One in Five Minds’ goal is that no one will be afraid to speak about mental illness and that all children in Bexar County who need treatment will be able to access it, regardless of their ability to pay.

One in Five Minds strives to educate the community, parents, professionals, and civic leaders about mental illness. We hold events open to the public, send out e-newsletters, attend conferences, and provide great information on this site. However only with the help of committed supporters like you, can One in Five Minds reach out and help these children. Please join our campaign today and share its message with others in your community.
